Gujarat Ekta Hawkers Union is a pioneering association of street vendors, established in 1986, with the primary objective of organizing, supporting, and empowering street vendors across Gujarat, with a significant focus on the city of Surat. Our union was formed by and for street vendors, recognizing the urgent need to protect their rights, ensure fair treatment, and provide them with the tools necessary to build stable and dignified livelihoods
For decades, street vendors have been an essential part of India’s urban economy—offering affordable goods and services, contributing to local markets, and serving as a vital source of employment for millions. Despite their contributions, they often face legal uncertainties, harassment, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to financial and social security schemes. Gujarat Ekta Hawkers Union was born out of this reality, to stand up for their rights and create a better future for vendors.
Advocacy and Legal Support : We advocate for policies that protect the rights of street vendors and fight against forced evictions and harassment. We also assist vendors in obtaining official recognition and registration under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.
Government Liaison : We act as a bridge between the vendors and government bodies, helping street vendors gain access to essential permissions, ID cards, vending certificates, and licenses, and ensuring their inclusion in municipal and urban planning decisions.
Financial Inclusion : Many vendors lack access to formal banking and loan facilities. We assist them in applying for government-backed loans and schemes, such as PM SVANidhi, and guide them in managing their finances and improving their creditworthiness.
Education & Awareness : Our team regularly conducts workshops and training sessions to educate vendors on their rights, business skills, hygiene practices, safety regulations, digital transactions, and more.
Community Building : Through collective organization, we foster unity among vendors and encourage a sense of shared identity and strength. We believe that organized voices are more powerful in bringing about lasting change.
Since our founding, Gujarat Ekta Hawkers Union has grown from a small grassroots initiative into a respected voice for street vendors across Gujarat. We have worked alongside municipal corporations, local and state governments, NGOs, and citizen groups to ensure that street vendors are no longer invisible stakeholders but active participants in the city’s development.
We take pride in the trust that thousands of vendors place in us. Our continued work has contributed to increased awareness about the rights and challenges of hawkers, more inclusive urban policies, and a growing recognition of the informal economy’s contribution to society.
A society where every street vendor has the right to work, earn, and live with dignity—free from exploitation, with equal access to opportunities, protection, and respect.
To organize, empower, and advocate for street vendors by ensuring their legal recognition, supporting their livelihoods, and facilitating their access to financial and social services through education, representation, and partnership with stakeholders.
